The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
