The much-anticipated second season of the musical adult cartoon Hazbin Hotel launches on the streaming platform this week, and fan speculation has been rampant.
Season 1 presents a diverse group of characters residing in the afterlife, pits them against each other accompanied by songs detailing their conflicts, and establishes heated competitions and angsty, affectionate connections that drive fan obsession.
The fandom's stated hopes for the new season differ greatly, but certain threads emerge over and over: Could Angel Dust break free from Valentino? Might we learn more about the binding agreement affecting the enigmatic Alastor? Might certain characters' relationships evolve?
"Obviously, I don't produce the show with fan service as the main goal," the showrunner stated recently. "But I feel like me being a devotee of the series means there's a lot of it just inherently. I also am eager for these things, and I hope some of these things to occur, and clearly some of these things are meant to happen in the show!"
The creator reveals her long-term vision is for five seasons of Hazbin Hotel. Seasons 3 and 4 have already been green-lit by Prime Video and A24, which produce the series.
That might mean viewers have to wait years for some of the biggest payoffs — but they could be shocked at how quickly season 2 progresses, and how many of what they're anticipating happens this season.
"I believe people are going to get a lot out of it," she adds. "There are several debut moments. I think we receive some really amazing reveals, some fascinating origin tales, and even just simple things, [like] I hope this character gets a song. […] We're going to hear much more singing from the characters we didn't get to hear before."
The creator is well-informed of the theories and desires about season 2 — especially in the form of audience prediction charts.
"I've come across a couple people create a prediction grid about season 2," she says. "Naturally I can't post it, but I've actually done a few items, and nearly every one of them have almost a bingo. I was like, Oh, if you put this [event] in this spot, it would be a bingo. So that makes me think we accomplish much [of what fans are waiting for in this season], because I was like, Oh, there's multiple potential bingos on this card. So that makes me happy."
Hazbin Hotel the second season launches on the streaming service on Oct. 29.
