Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
