Colombian President Says 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' should United States Invades.

The US President along with Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their war of words, increasing strains bilaterally following US forces struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Threats coupled with Accusations

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the American leader suggested comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation is “very sick too” and “run by a sick man involved in producing narcotics and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Alliance

The country was historically a close partner of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from bipartisan support in Washington, however, the relationship have soured significantly after Trump came to office.

Its illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am neither illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without information. End the false accusations," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And if they detain me, which a large part of the population admires and supports, they will release the fierce spirit of the people," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to President

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing a new constitution in 1991 and eventually served as an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a gun ... but for the homeland I shall resume weapons once more," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Rejection

Colombia's defense chief announced that Petro's protection team had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with Trump, yet figures from across the political spectrum have rejected the threats of a US attack on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities cancelled the president's entry visa following he encouraged American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. In October, authorities imposed economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence in the region and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out strikes on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
